Automata, Magic Tricks, Puzzles Boxes, Mechanical Toys
I recently witnessed an interesting box that could unexpectedly fit inside itself. I instantly knew I needed to work this out for myself and with a design that could be made on a laser cutter. As far as I can tell, these boxes have been around as magic tricks since the 60s when invented by a man named Lubor Fielder. Since then a number of people seem to have produced them with varying themes such as dice boxes, mailing boxes or even a giant box with a person inside. Once I had the design figured out, I thought that given the self referential nature of the box, a chicken and egg seemed like a suitable theme to decorate the outside. A chicken box is opened to reveal an egg box inside. Once the egg box is removed, the chicken box is shown to surprisingly fit inside the egg box that just came out of it. When the egg box is reopened a new surprise is revealed! Watch the following video to find out.
